* 10h30-12h00: mini cours par **Maxime Février** //Deformed Wigner ensemble, convergence et fluctuations of the empirical spectral measure \\ //In this mini lecture, the (Hermitian) deformed Wigner ensemble will be introduced, and its empirical spectral measure will be analyzed. We will prove its weak convergence to a deterministic probability measure characterized by an equation satisfied by its Stieltjes transform, following Pastur; fluctuations will then be discussed, following a recent preprint of Ji and Lee. |
* 14h00-15h00: **Pierre Youssef** //On the norm of Gaussian random matrices \\ //We consider a symmetric random matrix whose entries on and above the diagonal are independent Gaussian random variables with any variance pattern. We study the operator norm of this matrix and show that its distribution is comparable to that of the maximum Euclidean norm of the rows of the matrix, settling a conjecture of Latala. The expectation of the norm has an explicit formula in terms of the variance pattern and our result extends to more general Schatten norms. This is a joint work with Rafal Latala and Ramon Van Handel. |
* 15h30-16h30: **Boris Khoruzhenko** //How many stable equilibria will a large complex system have? \\ //In 1972 Robert May argued that (generic) complex systems become unstable to small displacements from equilibria as the system complexity increases. In search of a global signature of this instability transition, we consider a class of nonlinear dynamical systems whereby N degrees of freedom are coupled via a smooth homogeneous Gaussian vector field. Our analysis shows that with the increase in complexity, as measured by the number of degrees of freedom and the strength of interactions relative to the relaxation strength, such systems undergo an abrupt change from a simple set of equilibria (a single stable equilibrium if N is large) to a complex set of equilibria. Typically, none of these equilibria are stable and their number is growing exponentially with N. This suggests that the loss of stability manifests itself on the global scale in an exponential explosion in the number of equilibria. This talk based on a joint paper with Yan Fyodorov and on an unpublished work with Gerard Ben Arous and Yan Fyodorov. |
